Walking The Camino Portuguese Coastal Route: A Guarda to Oia, Spain

Another (much-needed) shorter day at 15km. I didn’t take any complete rest days, so these shorter walks were helpful for restoring some energy, as the days ahead grew longer in terms of kilometers.

There was a tail end of a hurricane threatening and the clouds were gathering as I walked out of A Guarda.

It was refreshing to walk in the cool and it was a quiet start to the day.

The rain soon set in and there was some road walking, which wasn’t too fun in the wet!

The path continued on tracks.

There was a little church with a stamp for the Credential on the hill overlooking Oia, and a cross.

There is a monastery at Oia, but it was closed during the short time I was there, so I didn’t go inside.

The sky cleared as I arrived, but by 4 pm, the tail end of the hurricane arrived and it rained hard. I had a lovely room overlooking the ocean and stayed warm inside while watching the storm.

Accommodation: I stayed at the Casa Puertas, a small hotel run by two sisters. It was rustic, but lovely and I appreciated the ocean view, and also the lovely breakfast in the morning. Google Translate was a help here, too.

Facilities: Not much along the way, but I took an espresso in my flask from a coffee shop before leaving. It’s a morning’s walk to Oia where there’s a good restaurant, but not much else.
